How to find a law case

First, go to Lexis Nexis

  1. Go to the UNT Libraries homepage:
    1. http://www.library.unt.edu/
  2. Click on the "electronic resources" link
  3. Under "Browse Abstract and Index titles by name," click the "L" (for LexisNexis)
  4. Scroll down until you see "LexisNexis Academic" and click on it

 

  1. Alternate method: go to the SMHM 3200 library resources page:
    1. http://www.library.unt.edu/classes/smhm/SMHM3200.htm
  2. Scroll down until you see "LexisNexis Academic" and click on it

Second, go to LexisNexis Legal

  1. on the far top left, under "Academic Search Forms," click "Legal Research"

Search case law by topic

  1. Under "Case Law," click on "Area of Law by Topic"
  2. enter a keyword or phrase, for instance, "Marriott"
  3. can enter additional terms in the next box, such as "resort"
  4. limit by topic (law type), for example, "corporate law"
  5. limit by date, default is the previous six months

Search case law by specific case

  1. Under "Case Law," click on "Get a Case"
  2. We're searching for the same case as before, "Pourzal v. Marriott Int'l"
  3. enter each party name in the appropriate text box (may need to eliminate abbreviations) and click "search"

Looking at a law case

  1. top right: can print or email case
  2. top: lists plaintiff(s) and defendant(s)
  3. top: Lexis citation (example: 2006 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 60230)
