Final Project
Assignment: Individual Digital Libraries
You will use CONTENTdm to build a personal digital library this semester. You must have 50 records in your collection with correct and appropriate metadata , indexing and search functions and usability testing .
Starr's Final Project
My digital library will be an archive of history, objects, and images from the Schmelzle / Brockmeier families (my paternal family). It will include such varied objects as family stories, quilts, letters, artwork, photographs, and sound & video recordings. This collection is to be created in honor of both the upcoming 2007 Schmelzle family reunion in Fairplay, Colorado, and the 65th wedding anniversary of my paternal grandparents.
For a sneak peek at some of the information to be included, take a look at my dad's webpage, featuring the story of my Grandpa Elmer "Brock" Brockmeier's time as a POW during WWII. It also features a number of family pictures and keepsakes related to the story. |
- Online Family Archive
- a webpage describing the project to family members and requesting help locating objects to include in the collection
- Artifact Wishlist
- webpage listing specific objects that I wish to use in the collection, and which family member possesses that object
- Metadata Thoughts
- a webpage with thoughts concerning the development of my metadata scheme (Metadata Report)
Current Issues / Questions
- I plan on using the mp3 file format for audio (WAV for master files?).
- What file format should I use for video?
- How will audio and video be "played" through contentDM?
- Will I have some kind of thumbnail image for audio/video?
- maybe use icon; headphones and movie camera
Final Project Requirements
There are 3 parts of the project you will turn in along the way:
- metadata report (report/presentation)
- You must select a metadata schema and DTD appropriate for you collection. CONTENTdm utilizes the basic DC elements. You are welcome to use that but you need to create a controlled vocabulary for your collection. We will discuss your collection and choice of metadata scheme in class for feedback and input.
- be prepared to explain why you chose the metadata scheme
- show __an example of your controlled vocabulary__
- due October 24th
midterm: 20 records (presentation)- You will present 20 records of your collection to the class as part of your midterm. This will give you an opportunity to have your collection searched by students and gain feedback.
- due October 24th
final project (presentation)- You will show off your final work during the last 2 class periods. Your presentation should highlight the unique aspects of your collection. We will also look at the metadata and test the search features you have set up.
- due December 5th
