Online Family Archive Project

by Jenni (aka Starr) Hoffman (formerly Brockmeier)

Fall 2006

Hello, family members!

This semester, I am taking a course in Digital Libraries. This is a topic that deals directly with my fulltime job as a Librarian for Digital Collections. We are each creating a semester-long project for the class, which is making an online, digital library or archive of some kind, containing at least 50 objects.

I'm seeking help from all those in the Brockmeier , Schmelzle , and related branches of the family . I'm looking for things to include in the collection (you can email images to me, or you can mail me documents, photos, or small objects). Here's a list of suggested items, but be creative and suggest your own--there are almost no limits on the scope of this project!

Some Suggested Items

  • letters (email scans or send the originals)
  • memoirs, diaries
  • stories
  • other documents or certificates
  • photos of family (any & all generations)
  • photos or other records of family events
  • heirlooms
    • quilts
    • musical instruments / antiques
    • jewelry
    • other items handed down in the family
  • recordings (tapes, CDs, videos, other) of:
    • family movies
    • family events
    • interviews with family members
    • performances, etc.
  • art created by family members
  • family stories or anecdotes (they don't have to be written; you can call me and tell me all about it!)
  • and more!

Here's my artifact wishlist, with some specific ideas.
