Scholarship Winner Profile

Lindsey Snodgrass

Hardin-Simmons has become even more important to me since I was awarded the scholarship last spring. In May I was hired to be the Coordinator of Student Activities. This has been an exciting transition as I had hoped to become an activities coordinator upon graduation but have received the opportunity to get a jump start on my career. I feel like the environment at HSU played a large role in making this possible for me. Since Hardin-Simmons is small it is fairly easy to become involved in areas that interest individuals. I was able to get involved in a leadership role in Student Congress that allowed me to head up several student activity projects. This experience gave me a great deal of credibility throughout the interview process because I had a good handle on college life and how students respond to various activities. I know that the time I have and will spend as a student and a staff member of HSU will serve me well. I have learned so much about myself and enjoyed such wonderful experiences and friendships at HSU. I will carry the lessons and memories from these years with me through every stage of my life. I so appreciate what the BYA does for HSU and for current students. All of the BYA members know how much any financial assistance is to students as the cost of a college education is ever increasing. Thank you for all you do!

BYA Volunteer Opportunities

Graduation Tent
- The Young Alumni Task Force will be hosting a tent party for both the December 16th 2006 and May 12th 2007 graduate ceremonies. They need as many volunteers as possible to hand out alumni bumper stickers, snacks, drinks, and take pictures.

Cowpoke Posse Corral at Homecoming
- The Posse Committee needs volunteers for Saturday, October 28th to help set up, tear down, and/or hand out Cowpoke Posse stuff to kids. Volunteers are needed for one-hour shifts; choose a shift between 8am and 12pm.

Julie Joiner ('94) married Clinton Darrell Hammer on February 18, 2006. The couple is residing in Waco, TX.
Matt Morris ('02) married Sarah Jones ('02) on June 10, 2006. The couple is living in Ft Worth where Sarah is practicing dentistry and Matt is a benefits consultant with Gus Bates Company.

Christina Dooley (Nolan '99) and her husband Chris welcomed twin boys Caven Reece and Chandler Ryan, born April 13, 2006, to their home in Abilene.
Tim ('98) and Jennifer Germany (Chambers '95) welcomed their third child Kenley to their home in Colleyville, TX, on January 12, 2006.

Careers

Drew Altom ('99) is now manager of the Lifeway Christian Store on Research Blvd in Austin, TX. He and his wife Jennifer (Barr '98) are living in Round Rock.
Josh Bowerman ('97) accepted a position as Director of Major Gifts and Gift Planning at Austin College in Sherman, TX. He and his wife Jennifer (Shimp '98) live in Plano, TX.
Rebekah Brown (Butler '99) was promoted to managing director of the Centennial Court Apartments at UT Arlington. She and her husband Geoffrey are now living in Dallas.
Chris Dodd ('98) is the athletic director and head football coach of Anna ISD. He lives with his wife Jill in Anna, TX.
Alex ('00) and Starr (Brockmeier '99) Hoffman both began new positions in 2006. Alex is now a Quality Assurance engineer for QuickOffice, and Starr is the Librarian for Digital Collections at the University of North Texas; they reside in McKinney, TX.

Robyn Kelley (Davis '99) and her husband Kyle ('01) now live in Albuquerque with their two children Coleton and Kyleigh.
Darren Wickham participated in his second medical evangelism trip in early 2006. He lives in the Kingdom of Bahrain working as the Managing Director of IT and Customer Services for Sabre Travel Network. Forty Acres Update

W.D. and Hollis Bond professor of English, Dr. Robert Fink, will be signing copies of his latest book, Twilight Innings: A West Texan on Grace and Survival, in the campus bookstore during Homecoming.

Alumnus and Board of Trustee member, Dr. Kelvin J. Kelley, addressed HSU students, faculty, and staff during the fall Convocation ceremony on September 5, 2006. Kelley served as pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Abilene from 1998 to 2006. He has since founded and is director of FACES Ministries.

U.S. News and World Report listed Hardin-Simmons University in tier one of western universities offering master’s degrees in the 2007 edition of “America’s Best Colleges.” This is the fourth consecutive year HSU has received the prestigious honor. About the recognition, Dr. W. Craig Turner said, “As a Christian university, we have a responsibility to equip our graduates with the finest tools in academia, while placing that excellence firmly in the context of a moral, ethical, and spiritual family of faith.”

The Princeton Review recently released its ratings of top colleges and universities in the United States and named Hardin-Simmons as a “Best in the West” university. The Review is a nation-wide survey based on over 100,000 students’ evaluation of academics/administration, campus-life, fellow students, and themselves. HSU is one of only 21 so honored in the state of Texas.

Renovation is underway on a new Welcome Center to be housed in the current Hunter Hall building. Construction, which began in late May, will convert the east side of the building into a grand, aesthetically pleasing entrance with structural elements that mirror other buildings in the immediate area. The new welcome center will feature a drive-through entrance with stately columns, and a beautifully restored lobby. The lobby will retain the decorative features familiar to those who called Hunter Hall home while attending HSU, but upgrade amenities for guests and hospitality staff.

Construction began August 17, 2006 on the Leland Alumni Wall. Located between Sandefer and Abilene Halls, the wall will feature the names of graduates and is expected to be completed by Homecoming 2006.
