• consider your audience:
  • 47% of all adult Americans have broadband at home
  • but 23% still use dial-up

• speed can be affected by:
  • image resolution/size
  • documents (PDFs, MS Office)
  • multimedia (video, audio)
• best practices:
  • Limit your use of these files
  • Provide alternate forms of the same information
    • (for example, provide a text transcript for a video)
  • Keep your images, documents, and multimedia small
    • dial-up connections may get about 7k/second, so consider:
      • average website, including images: 50k = 7 seconds to download
      • average mp3 (audio file) is about 4m = 9.5 minutes to download
