GovDocs Training (first session)
Training: Valerie Glenn
Notes: Starr Hoffman
6.14.06
- published weekly
- Texas Code published annually (in reference section & online)
- TexReg: includes all TX agencies
- publishes:
- proposed rules (regular basis)
- gubernatorial appointments
- proclamations
- executive orders
- attorney general opinions
- UNT has June 1991 – current
- Cathy receives them
- Daniel process them (online)
- pdf / html file for each issue
- some 1990’s are txt, some txt / html
- excluded from the web site search (too many results)
- back issues (1976-ish – 1991) = DPU experiment
- back issues not pdfs
- 3 issues on TX Portal (see example)
- Secretary of State runs TexReg
- UNT has official partnership with Sec. State
- no longer publish home addresses of judges (removed some past instances when requested by the individual)
- UNT partnership with Sec. State
- legislative sessions (bills up)
- mostly pdfs
- not searchable; just browseable
- bills proposed have signatures
- passed bills remain on TX Leg. website (1995/6 earliest)
- late 1800’s – early 1900’s = UNT collection sketchy
- Austin’s Legislative Reference Library provides older bills than UNT has access to
- (also some we might have in remote storage)
- meets every other year (odd # years)
- next regular session = Spring 2007
- special sessions can be called at other times
- website: provides bill alerts (when a bill is changed)
Reference Question: “I’m looking for a bill…” Important to ask: “Did this bill become law / was it passed?”
- UNT online: volumes 1-20 (through 1920-21)
- DigiLab project: finish through volume 30
- DigiLab expects to finish by end of summer 2006
- realistically, should finish by year-end of 2006
- re-name “Historic Laws of Texas” (no longer merely “Nineteenth-Century Laws of Texas”)
- includes records when a republic, state, etc.
- State Law Library also contains the constitution, statues, etc.
- link included in “related resources” on several pages
- (often, these related resources are law libraries which have completed digitization projects)
- Valerie recently changed the search engine; it now uses the TX Portal engine / interface
- use this search engine and evaluate
- desire added functionality? (present relevant passage, not entire file—have to perform search again)
- the Gammel’s project has led to other projects, such as the Laws & Resolutions archive
- UT’s Utopia
- Utopia = “digital gateway” (not bound by content type – includes GovDocs and non-GovDocs)
- currently: older projects in state of cleanup (CRS, posters, soil surveys, Gammel’s, etc.)
- ACIR should be in digital library system by end of summer 2006
- Gammel’s by end of 2006
- newsmaps uncertain timetable (if borrow the 40-50 SMU has, could complete in 3rd or 4th week of July)
- newsmaps / soil surveys completely scanned, but not yet processed (need metadata)
- not all posters have metadata; this project is likely now under Rare Books (since they now house the originals)
- posters will go in the WWII collection online (also have WWI—these are more unique)
- another good WWII poster collection
- our uniqueness lies in reproductions (Mark will know if this is operational)
- ongoing: (CC, CRS, TXReg)
- future: in fall 2006, will come up with some new projects
