GODORT Web Managers meeting
January 13, 2008
Notes
list of common mistakes on the ALA wiki (new today)
updates about Collage are most commonly posted to wiki
hands-off training
Collage looks like it may be more complicated; hard to tell
if you ask for help and get no response, ask again (there's just one person there)--don't feel bad about asking again
need to find out from Rob a *firm* date for migration (next week)
-- ASK ROB? ****
then schedule a 2-3 week period for review of pages
-- immediately let the group know how fast
-- web archiving task force
-- hoping to address dead links
Collage notifies you of orphan links
some things from the Berkely site *are* still available through the Internet Archive
--- may be useful for archiving purposes
-- in a pinch, archive by copy/pasting your HTML to a txt file
some old archived pages were on academic sites
-- will unpublished pages be migrated? (S)
-- ASK LOUISE/ROB? ****
-- email document to the group (SITE MAP) Vicki Tate
-- also the REPORT, that lists what can and cannot be deleted (without archiving)
-- good guide for places that need to change
-- give all the links for GODORT pages to the Internet Archive, and they will spider it over the next couple of months
-- ala.org/robots.txt -- ?
GODORT wiki (James Jacobs)
problems with creating user accounts
offer to make a user account with admin privileges for anyone in the web managers group
currently can't upload files to the wiki--workaround is upload them to the CMS and link to them from the wiki
to work on docs collaboratively, do so on the wiki itself, then upload to CMS when complete
downside of using the wiki is it doesn't have a RSS feed
James will see if they will possibly allow just image uploads
DttP would like to have the abilty to upload images for several purposes
in navigation, click on "help"
Kris has a SLDTF Sandbox section
* wiki = works in progress, frequent changes; DttP pieces that necessitate discussions
* website = more permanent information
-- discussion about possibility of GODORT blog--ALA will provide us with one, or U of M have a Moveable Type application
-- need a link to GODORT homepage from the wiki (James will add this in the navigation bar)
-- remind people to use the "~~~~" to add the timestamp and username on your comment
Jenny Gerke
-- added to web managers list-serv and needs Collage training and account (SLDTF)
-- also secretary for state and local
Kirsten Clarke -- as backup for Gretchen (Leg.); she'll need Collage training/account, and list-serv
in current environment:
-- practice has been that we each maintain our particular silo
-- more current content on the opening screen
-- maybe new things that rotate off (onto news page? archive?)
-- info on Annual/Midwinter activities months in advance
-- possibly pull content from another, easier-to-change/maintain that way (RSS)
--- will ALA let us do that? **** (ASK LOUISE; then Amy W. can test it on a page)
---- then we could have a blog and use that for updates (PHP or java)
--- it would be archived and available through RSS to general public (more discovery)
---- will it display RSS feeds?
possible frontpage ideas:
-- new GODORT book; thumbnail, link to purchase on amazon, blurb
-- annual/mw schedules, programs, preconferences (link to sponsors, presenters)
-- photos from DttP?
