Friday Frags Redesign Subgroup Meeting

8.16.2006

present:

Gayla Byerly

Mary Durio

Mark Phillips

Starr Hoffman

Mark presented information that the Emerging Technologies Group (ETG) has discussed regarding the Friday Frags (FF) redesign.

Exploring Options

  • looked into blogs
    • strong opinions related to blogs
  • then looked at e-publication model

Issues with New Format

  • will it be public or internal?
  • if internal: open to all UNT, just faculty/staff, just library...?
    • LDAP issues:
      • if open to all UNT, on-campus it shouldn't flag us
      • if open to library only, authentication will be required
        • this can be an issue with RSS feeds
  • where will it be hosted?
  • who will be in charge/edit it?
  • how much work will it entail?
  • how do you authenticate it (if internal)?

ETG Recommendations

  • should be technologically easy
  • use Plone
    • will have good support
    • help LAN/MMDL to start experimenting with Plone
  • Wordpress or Moveable Type also okay
  • UNT's InHouse is ColdFusion-based blogging software
    • problem: cost-based
    • we should easily be able to re-format FF for free

Questions & Actions

  • how do we get training?
    • alot will be trying and using it
    • Garret & Will will probably show us how to get started
    • we'd use new packages in Plone
  • we'll need to talk to ETG to determine what we want
    • our subgroup will attend their next meeting, 8/22 at 9am
  • then in the future, we'll go to LAN/MMDL to talk about setting it up/organizing it
  • in the meantime, look at suggestions for FF
  • some ideas
    • use categories to help organize topics
    • set up auto-publication dates (Friday at noon)
    • authors send articles, which are queued for editor approval (then auto-published after approval)
    • send auto email message to library staff when new FF is available (include link)
  • Mark recommends experimenting with using categories
    • new Google blogs through Blogger
    • get a Wordpress account
  • what will ETG be asking from us?
    • nothing
    • ETG is there to help flesh out any technological issues, use as a sounding board, get feedback

Next...

  • need a statement that we've met and are recommending that we make changes to the Friday Frags
  • Gayla will read comments on the library forum and will read Strategic Plan
  • will use these as justification for meeting with ETG about FF
  • looking to implement the new FF around Dec/Jan
