EDHE 6500
12.04.2008
- free resource for APA that went out on the EDHE list (from Harvard)
- they will email it out to the class
- discussion of Dr. Cutright's research project on Higher Ed in Africa
- he's traveling in Jan 2009 to Kenya, Tanzania (others to Uganda, Rwanda)
- look this up and buy it
- also ask Baaska for title, "101 Things Graduate School Didn't Teach Me"
how do you convert piece of research (or presentation) into an article?
how do you approach faculty about dual authorship?
- second authorship appropriate if you're doing research
- especially if you did the entire lit review
- doesn't matter how many other authors there already are
- what's the nature of the article? how much did you contribute?
- several approaches... faculty approaches vary a great deal
exercise: reviewing a manuscript for publication
- read journal guidelines
- read 10-page manuscript
- make judgments
as a reviewer, differences in your comments to editor vs. article author?
- comments to editor: summative
- comments to author: formative (constructive)
ALA heading levels: page 513 in APA Manual
basic article format
- abstract
- intro ("so what?")
- lit review
- tell the major points gleaned--a sentence or two per important author
- research questions
- methods
- results
- discussion of results and what they mean
- implications (for practice or research)
- references
- not a brain-dump, but a reflection of what shaped the paper and directly affected it
- there is a lot of variation on this format, but essentially the same details
discussion of the last half of Cone/Foster book
- Chapter 9: Stats; good review of everything you'd use in a QT dissertation
- Newsom or Chen have good courses on QLT
- nothing else to discuss; no assignment on this
