EDHE 6500

Essentials of Academic Publishing

09.04.2008

Action Items (in two weeks)

  • decide what project I want to work on
  • email Dr. Cutright about it (or about various options)
  • read all of Becker text
  • submit reflection paper on Becker on Wednesday before the next class

(first class meeting, intros)

About This Class

main outcome: get a publication published and/or presentation accepted

  • also info on dissertation; mostly in terms of strategy to approach it and get it done more expeditiously
  • more individual consultation than class meetings
  • also wants to work with us on the drafts of the material
  • will want to see our work before it is formally submitted
  • what you're publishing can be a positive reflection on UNT; poor materials reflects badly on UNT
  • often go through about five drafts on a 1,000 - 1,500 word book review

My Goals

  • move from presentations to publications
    • both library and higher ed in general journals
    • some projects already in mind (distance ed library support, library dean ed backgrounds, using wikis for project documentation, etc.)
    • also re-purpose from existing articles
  • peer-reviewed articles
  • transforming thesis chapter(s) into article(s)
  • I love to write!
  • also--ask about re-purposing:
  • turning IFLA paper into publication
  • turning Outreach chapter into presentation at ALA (?)

some potential publication sources:

  • Review of Higher Education
  • Education Review (Gene Glass)

Syllabus Discussion

(see first EDHE 6500 page)

Book Reviews

(see print handouts)

Why write one?

  • "bling" on your CV
  • keeps your reading current (and could get free books!)
  • not an equivalent of a refereed research piece, but it's not bad
  • good way to start publishing

other handouts:

  • How to secure placement of book reviews
    • there are usually more journals desiring book reviews than there are willing reviewers
  • Style, voice, and quality in book reviews
  • example book reviews
  • guides to publishing in various fields (Cabell's)

How do you locate books to review?

  • go to publisher websites that publish heavily in your field
    • look at their new releases
