GODORT Legislation II / GIS
06.23.2007, 1:30 - 3:30
(1:30 - 2:00pm missed some content here)
- ALA Emerging Leaders, Advocacy, GIS, group of 10 or less
- draft resolutions (handout)
- GPO Appropriations resolution
- last "resolved" total = $182 million
- more discussion of various points...
- will work on more wordsmithing outside of this meeting
- Resolution on Redundant Sites and E-Government
- discussion of "mirror site" versus "redunant system"
- may need to talk to someone in LITA about the particular definition of each term
- may need to additionally stress geographic dispersion of mirror servers in case of disaster
- "geographically dispersed" often defined as at least 600 miles apart
- CRS resolution discussion
- should there be a resolution, or a letter?
- some concern that there needs to be some kind of action in answer to the pending legislation
- concern with the bill's proposed 30-day wait on CRS report releases
- should we frame that we don't support the 30-day wait period?
- it's not a simple issue--various kinds of reports and levels of release within Congress; probably can't use the same criteria for releasing all of them
- immediate availability is not likely and insistence on it might weaken the legislation
- waiting period is better than no access
- therefore, no reference to it should be made in the resolution or letter
- vote: in favor of a letter (not a resolution)
- Valerie Glenn will work on it this evening
- go through the NAN? generally agreed a good idea
- memorial resolution for Ridley
- discussion about ALA's arrangements vs. GODORT's resolution
- resolution discussion (wording, etc.)
- open access to federally funded research resolution?
- original idea to include CRS, but general consensus to keep these separate
- national institute of health public access policy (put in senate bill; likely to be put in house)
- re-introduction of FRPAA
- (handouts)
- does there need to be a resolution when there is already a general policy in place (as represented in handouts)?
- we don't need to create a resolution for everything that we want to take action on
- GIS thinks there's already a resolution on FRPAA
- open government act; putting pressure on senators to agree (esp. Repub.s) and pass this
- GPO letter open for public comment; closes this Friday (distributed in May)
- all, unedited comments to be placed in binder and taken to JCP
- in October-ish there will be a revised document for community to look at
- may have a Council session specifically on this at FDLP in fall
- these are first steps; there is still the question of implementation
- possible meeting in November about shared letter and communication issues
- communication within ALA is important to resolve this issue
